Our members got stuck into a huge number of activities including Climbing, Grass Sledging, Jacobs Ladder, Archery, Backwoods Cooking and 3G Swing; check out the photos on Twitter to see more!
Gilwell Park is an exceptionally special place for scouting. Baden Powell chose it for the first adult training camp since when it has become the home of scouting both in the UK and across the world. We were lucky enough to hold a Scouts Own service within the Gilwell Faith Walk on Easter Sunday.
We were also fortunate enough to be joined by our former Akela St Lukes (now known as “Andrew”). Andrew delivered what many would describe as one of his best ever campfires; which, if you’ve ever attended one of his campfires is saying a lot!
This years camp has repeatedly been described as our best yet, however you don’t have to take me by my word, here is what one of our Scouts, Alice, had to say about the experience:
“It was amazing. The best bits? Roasting marshmallows over an open fire, telling horror stories as it got dark, climbing to the top of Jacob’s ladder, even navigating there (although I admit that we got a bit lost) and getting to know the other scouts more than I would over an evening, including how the boys never sleep. The leaders worked so hard, cooking and making lots of fun, teaching us how to use an axe and how to walk on stilts – they had so much patience. Easter Camp is a contender for the highlight of 2017 – Can’t wait until summer camp!”
We’ve had more positive messages than ever however we cannot take all the credit. Many thanks to our fellow leaders for supporting us. Moreover, hard earnt extra special thanks go to:
Camp isn’t just for the kids, it’s for the leaders and parents too. It is challenging to everyone in thier own way including adults. We all learn something, we all work together as a team and we have one hell of a time doing it! We couldn’t think of a better way to have spent the bank holiday weekend: thank you for trusting us to take your kids off on the adventure! It was well described by one dad:
“We all came back exhausted having risen to many challenges – but all the better for it.
The whole thing gave me such an insight into the behaviours of kids with such diversity of characters – each facing different challenges in life. The experience of Camp is so different to anything else in their lives and so enriching, so valuable – thank you again!”
[here comes the shameless plug]
